Father's Day: Honouring Everyday Heroes 2020
- 10 September 2020

Reflecting on Father’s Day During Challenging Times
In 2020, Father’s Day looked different for many families across Victoria. Amid restrictions and uncertainty, SMCT remained committed to making meaningful moments special. Although we couldn’t gather in person, we were honoured to host a heartfelt Facebook Live Remembrance Service in collaboration with Templeton Family Funerals on Thursday 3 September.
Honouring Our Everyday Heroes
The phrase “Not all heroes wear capes” reminds us that true heroism often lives in everyday acts of love and kindness. For many of us, our fathers are those heroes—guiding, protecting, and inspiring us in ways that shape our lives.
Whether your father is near, far, or remembered in spirit, there are many meaningful ways to honour him this Father’s Day.
A Virtual Gathering of Remembrance and Connection
During the service, our community came together to:
- Light remembrance candles in honour of fathers and father figures.
- Share personal stories and memories that celebrated their lives.
- Support one another through reflection and connection.
We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who joined us. For many, this may have been the first Father’s Day without their loved one, or the first time unable to visit their final resting place. Your presence and compassion helped create a space of healing and remembrance.

If you missed the live event or would like to revisit it, you can watch the service here. The video features tributes, reflections, and moments of shared remembrance from our community.
Ways to Honour Your Father or Father Figure
✉️ Write a Letter
Express your thoughts and emotions through writing. Whether shared aloud or kept private, the act of writing can bring comfort and connection.
📖 Share a Memory
Tell stories about your father with friends or family. Laughter, tears, and reflection help keep his spirit alive. You’re also welcome to share memories with us via our social media channels.
🛠️ Do Something in His Honour
Engage in an activity he loved—gardening, cooking, fixing things, or simply enjoying nature. These moments become tributes to his legacy.
🕯️ Light a Candle
A candle can symbolise remembrance and love. You might also place flowers, say a prayer, or play his favourite song.
📚 Read a Poem or Quote
Sometimes, the words of others help us express what’s in our hearts. Here’s a poem to reflect on:
“There’s A Special Place In My Heart for Him” – Unknown
“There’s a special kind of feeling
When I think about you, Dad...
Missing you always,
Happy Father’s Day.”
Support and Resources
If you need support during this time, we are here to help. Take a look at our resources and services offered.
