Hosting a Funeral Wake

A funeral wake is a meaningful gathering held after a funeral or memorial service, where family and friends come together to reflect, share stories, and celebrate the life of someone special. It’s a time for connection, comfort, and remembrance in a more relaxed setting.

At Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (SMCT), we offer beautifully appointed function rooms at Springvale Botanical Cemetery in Springvale and Bunurong Memorial Park in Dandenong South, designed to support families during this important moment of farewell.

What happens at a funeral wake?

A wake is typically held after the funeral service and may include:

• Sharing memories and stories

• Light refreshments or a catered meal

• Viewing photo slideshows or tribute videos

• Signing a memorial book

• Quiet reflection or conversation

It’s a meaningful time for connection, remembrance, and support.

Do I need to have a wake after the funeral?

Holding a wake after a funeral is a personal choice, often guided by the wishes of the person who has died and their family. A wake offers a more relaxed space for people to come together, share memories, and support one another - making it a meaningful part of the farewell for many. While attending both the funeral and the wake is thoughtful, it’s not required.

Our function venues at Springvale Botanical Cemetery and Bunurong Memorial Park offer serene, fully equipped spaces ideal for wakes and memorial gatherings. Whether you're planning an intimate farewell or a larger gathering, our team is here to support you every step of the way.

Features include:

• Flexible room sizes based on the number of guests catered for (each room accommodates up to 65 guests; additional rooms available for a fee)

• Catering options inspired by diverse cultural cuisines, with freshly prepared food and low gluten, vegetarian, and vegan menu options available

• Multimedia support for slideshows, music, and tributes

• On-site florist and café for added convenience

Booking information:

• Each function booking includes 90 minutes from the scheduled start time, giving you ample time to gather and reflect.
• If you need a little extra time, this can be arranged during the booking process.
• To help us prepare everything smoothly, we kindly ask that menu selections are confirmed at least 48 hours before your function.

• We’re unable to accommodate BYO food or beverages, due to Health and Safety Regulations and Liquor Licensing
