On-site recycling and waste management

On-site recycling and waste management
We are committed to caring for the environment by taking responsibility for our actions and their impact on the planet.
Sustainability means protecting both the natural and built environments to ensure a healthy and balanced future.
You will notice fixed bins across our sites for general waste, organics and recycling (near to facilities). The bins are placed in fixed locations to make them easier to find, keep wildlife out, and prevent them from tipping over in windy conditions.
Please help us keep our organic bins free of rubbish by sorting your waste:
- Remove all plastics, wrappers, rubber bands, and ribbons from flowers before placing them in the organics bin.
- Place plastic and fabric flowers in the general waste bin.
Which bin does it go in?
Remember, when you have the option please separate your garden/organics waste from other waste. You can reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and help keep our grounds beautiful by being waste wise.

About waste management at SMCT
As part of our 2022-25 Environmental StrategyExternal site, SMCT is working to reduce waste and achieve a goal of diverting 25% of waste from landfill by 2025.
Our 2023 waste audits revealed that 38% of the material in a typical SMCT general waste bin is garden organics that could be recycled.
SMCT successfully tested a new waste collection system at Springvale Botanical Cemetery to divert garden organics from landfill. The new ‘two-bin’ system allowed for the collection of garden organics. Visitors will now find red-lid bins for general waste and green-lid bins for organics across many of our sites.
