Limited release of new grave sites at Cheltenham Memorial Park
- 29 May 2026

Cheltenham Memorial Park has long been a place where generations of local families have come to honour their loved ones. As one of Melbourne’s oldest burial grounds, its pathways hold more than a century and a half of stories, memories, and quiet moments of reflection. Today, Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (SMCT) is humbled to share an unexpected and deeply meaningful development: Several beautiful grave sites, previously thought unavailable, have now been released for families in need and for those wishing to plan ahead by securing a site for themselves or a loved one.
A cemetery shaped by time
In the mid‑19th century, when the memorial park was established in Cheltenham, Melbourne was a young and rapidly growing city. Communities were expanding, families were settling, and cemeteries were entrusted with the solemn responsibility of recording life’s final chapters.

Record keeping in the 1900s looked very different from the digital precision we rely on today. Cemeteries across Australia used handwritten ledgers, ink‑based plot maps, and manual registers, all created with care, yet vulnerable to the realities of the era. Ink could fade. Paper could warp in damp weather. A caretaker’s handwriting might be smudged by rain or dust and during periods of population growth, it wasn’t uncommon for staff to rely on memory or informal notes.
These early systems, though earnest and diligent, were never designed to withstand 90+ years of weathering, staff changes, and evolving administrative practices.
Through a detailed reconciliation of historical maps, burial registers, and on‑site verification, SMCT is proud to offer a rare opportunity to secure beautiful grave sites within Cheltenham Memorial Park.
A meaningful opportunity for local families
This discovery is a gift of space, dignity, and choice for families in the Cheltenham and Bayside communities, particularly those who wish to honour their loved ones close to home.
These newly released sites offer:
- Local families the chance to lay loved ones to rest within their own community
- A peaceful, historic setting surrounded by mature trees, heritage pathways, and the quiet beauty of a site shaped by generations
- Continuity of tradition for those with long‑standing ties to the area

Each site has been carefully assessed to ensure it meets SMCT’s standards for safety, accessibility, and long‑term care, providing families with confidence and comfort during one of life’s most tender moments.
